Yoko Taro says Metaphor ReFantazio is “so stylish, I almost wet myself”

Atlus recently brought on Nier developer Yoko Taro (spotted by Automaton, who also drew attention to the key quote) to promote their upcoming Metaphor ReFantazio. While Yoko Taro is not generally associated with Atlus (or Sega), he was very enthusiastic about the new game, stating, “It’s so stylish, I almost wet myself.”

We’ve all been there; playing a game so captivating that our weakened bladders give out. Sometimes, not enough to breach the silk of our underpants, but other times so voluminous that a replacement couch must be brought in immediately (I assume most people keep a spare on hand for emergencies). In this case, it was the UI that Taro found so pant-soakingly amazing. Who doesn’t appreciate a good typeface? The first time I saw Microsoft Word’s Wordart, I nearly died of dehydration.

Taro stresses that he was neither incentivized nor under duress when he gave his opinion. He says he’s a fan of Atlas and later clarifies, “Oh, I didn’t get any money for this! I’m just a middle-aged dude who showed up,” he said. Much of the video posted on YouTube is just tomfoolery – the best type of foolery – alongside voice actress Tomomi Isomura. He spends a good amount of time talking about Nier. Admittedly, it gets pretty bizarre. Eventually, it’s just his mask on a box that he’s voicing over. Really on brand for Yoko Taro.

Metaphor Refantazio looks like a good time. I don’t think I’ll actually play it because it’s likely going to be a jillion hours long. I don’t have time for that these days. Unless the bosses here asked me to cover it and gave me, like, a week off to play it. Then I’d play it. And they should totally do that.

Metaphor Refantazio releases October 11, 2024 and will be available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
