Where to spend attribute points first in Cyberpunk 2077

What sort of gear you need, choom?

Choosing where to spend your attribute points in Cyberpunk 2077‘s earliest hours is no mean feat, especially now that the game’s character progression has been turned and twisted on its proverbial head. Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 was a big deal, after all. With all of that in mind, whether you’re a total newcomer to the game or a veteran alike, odds are that you still won’t be able to make up your mind on where to take your first couple of attribute points.

This short guide will go over all of the newly revised skill trees, explain what the earliest attribute upgrades might net you, and help you decide what to splurge on when you don’t really have much to splurge in the first place, early on. Though it is possible to respec attributes and perk points if needed, note that this option is only available once per character, making it something you’d probably want to keep around until late-game, at the very least.

Consider using the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 Build Planner

Before we begin properly, it’s worth highlighting the fact that CD Projekt RED was kind enough to set us all up with a full-fledged character-build planner ahead of the game’s 2.0 update. Virtually all of the skills and abilities had been revamped and retrofitted for a different meta, meaning that none of the old builds were as potent as they were before the update hit.

Those who generally know what they’re about will be able to catch up using the provided tool with minimum fuss. On the other hand, if this doesn’t help you at all and you need a bit more context before kicking things off, read on.

Where should your first attribute points go in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0?

As of Cyberpunk 2077 2.0, the in-game level cap has been raised from 50 to 60. It’s a hefty increase, for sure, but the cap is still in place, meaning you won’t be able to max out all the skills no matter what. Your initial attribute point investment will likely inform the rest of your build to some extent, so it’s going to be a good idea to decide what sort of character you’d like to play.

To keep things simple and useful in equal measure, we’ve come up with some of the most common early Cyberpunk 2077 character archetypes. Each of them has two or three distinctive attributes you’re going to need to invest in. So, decide which archetype suits your playstyle best, and then put your first attribute points into the appropriate stat.

  • Hacker: Intelligence, Cool
  • Soldier: Body, Reflex, Cool
  • Ninja: Cool, Reflex
  • Engineer: Technical Ability, Reflex

This is pretty foolproof, and it starts making sense as soon as you hover over the appropriate skill/perk tree in the menu screen.

If you need a concrete example, let’s take our archetypal Hacker into consideration. Basically, no matter what sort of hacking-focused character you play, you will need to put points into both Intelligence and Cool, depending on the abilities you wish to unlock. So, it makes perfect sense to put a few attribute points into these perk trees as early as possible, to get you started on a path towards those perks and skills.

From that point on, you can spec out the rest of your character however you see fit: putting a few attribute points into Body is useful if you want to lug around a shotgun or a machine gun, of course. These decisions will come to you naturally as you go through Cyberpunk 2077, however, and for the first couple of levels, it’s good to stick to something more concrete to keep yourself focused.
