Is it mandatory that ancient, abandoned worlds be filled with runes? In Enshrouded, runes aren’t nearly as important as they are in, say, Elden Ring, but they’re still something that every player should be collecting.
Technically you can find runes just about anywhere in the game. They show up from time to time in treasure chests that are tucked away in secret corners all over the map. The best place to farm runes, though, is in the Shroud. They drop from the soldier you fight in the fog on a fairly regular basis. Anytime you’re searching for a new craftsman or clearing out another Elixir Well, you’ll also be passively picking up runes. When it’s time for a big upgrade pushback at base, just grab your favorite weapon and start clearing soldiers until you have all the runes you need.
Using your runes
Runes serve two main purposes in the game. At your Flame Altar, you can trade them in to reset all of your skill points to try out a new build. A reset only costs 10 runes, which is an amount you can sometimes get from a single loot drop.
Then, at various NPCs like the blacksmith, you can use runes to upgrade your weapons. Upgrading is the real money sink here because it’s worth fully upgrading anything you use on a regular basis because you can repair items for free and use them indefinitely. A weapon’s rarity affects how many upgrades it has available, and you’re typically going to need between 50 and 200 runes to max something out.
