Baldur’s Gate 3 is a phenomenal game, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t moments of confusion as you seek to deliver the smackdown to the Absolute and its cronies. At several moments in the game, things happen that don’t seem to make a lick of sense — and one of them can be found in the earliest part of the game’s first act.
Halsin, a druid living in the Emerald Grove whom you can invite into your party, has gone missing, and finding him can feel like a chore if you’re not sure where to start. So, let’s go through a few possibilities and ideally help you to find this very powerful druid.
Where to find Halsin in the Goblin Camp?
Upon your arrival at the Goblin Camp, Halsin will be kinda out of the way — to be honest, I didn’t even know he was there until after I had already done most other tasks at the camp.
In the Shattered Sanctum, he’s imprisoned in the Worg Pens, which can be accessed via a door at the top of the stairs to the immediate northeast. He’ll be transformed into his bear form when you first meet him, and what’s more, he’ll help you to defeat the surrounding enemies once free.
In my playthrough, I didn’t rescue Halsin until Nightwarden Minthara had begun her death march to the Emerald Grove. So, upon speaking with him after clearing the Worg Pens, he seems to imply that he’ll meet us at the grove for the defense mission. This leads us to our next point of discussion.
Can Halsin Help Defend the Grove?
It would seem not — in my case, he didn’t show up at the grove until after the battle was won. And, it looks like this is how it plays out for many others across the internet, as well. The reasoning for this is that — for some players, anyway — he stays behind at the Goblin Camp, despite talking a big game about protecting the natural order. It would’ve been nice to have his help during that nightmare fight.
What happens if Halsin dies?
Because so much in Baldur’s Gate 3 is optional — including Halsin — if the druid is killed by any means, c’est la vie. It will probably mean horrible things for not just the grove but also the Shadow-cursed Lands, but given those quests are also optional, the game will continue onward regardless of Halsin’s fate.
If you have let Halsin die, either accidentally or on purpose, you can use Speak with Dead to talk with him, or loot him to nab a Camp Supply Sack, 2x Goodberries, 2x Potion of Healing, a Scroll of Revivify, a Quarterstaff, a pair of Tasteful Boots, Halsin’s Grove Garments, a pair of Druidic Bracers, a pair of Grovetender Boots, and Druid Leather Armour. I hope you can carry all that, along with the weight of either murdering, or letting die, one of the best boys in Baldur’s Gate 3. You monsters.
