The big takeaway lesson from Starfield is that people love building ships. Is the game itself fun? Absolutely. That said, folks seem to really be falling in love with the whole shipbuilding part of the game. Putting together your own ship one module at a time is fantastic fun, but many players have a burning question on their minds. Where is the best place to build your ship?
Where is the best place to build a ship in Starfield?
While you can build a ship at any Ship Services Technician in Starfield, this can be oddly limiting. Not everywhere will sell the same pieces, and you won’t always be able to get the parts you want on certain planets. So, what should you do?
While there are a lot of factors at play, the best place to build a ship in Starfield is at a landing pad at an Outpost that you build yourself. Find a great spot to build an outpost, build a landing pad, and then build your own ship. But don’t run off to do it just yet, as there is a lot more to consider here.
The biggest question is actually when should you start building your own ships? Getting access to ship parts happens over time, and there are even a couple of different ways to approach buildings ships. As you rank up in both level and skills, you will get access to more parts. So, the higher your level and the more you invest in skills like Starship Design, the better parts you will get access to. You will also need a lot of cash, as building ships is not cheap.
Setting up your own Outpost will also require certain resources and funds as well. I would actually suggest the following steps on your path toward setting up your own galaxy-famous ship-building services.
- Star by just upgrading your ships to get used to the interface and systems. Do this by asking any Ship Service Technician about modifying your ship.
- Buy a small, cheap ship and experiment with new parts. The Frontier is actually a great ship to experiment on if you don’t grow too attached to it.
- Head to Deimos Shipyard on Deimos and build your first ship from scratch. This is a solid place to go, as the parts look sweet and have good quality and performance.
- Level up fully, and invest four skill points in Starship Design.
- Build your own outpost with a landing pad and get stuck in.
It’s a process, but so is playing Starfield. You can, of course, ignore that progression and just dive straight into more complex ship building, but I think that would be a waste of credits when you can just ramp up your efforts as your wealth grows in the game.
Your landing pad will give you access to most parts in the game. If you need something very specific from a certain manufacturer, just build as much of the ship as you can, then go visit the manufacturer and grab what you need from them and add it to your ship there. You can find locations for the individual manufacturers’ staryards below.
If you are at a loss about which weapons to use on your ship, make sure you check our list of best ship weapons in Starfield. Some of them might be out of your budget, but nearly all of them have lower-class versions that should be suitable for you.
