What to do with Prototype Head item in Remnant 2: The Dark Horizon?

Robot body part collect-a-thon? Ayup.

It goes without saying that Remnant 2: The Dark Horizon is going to inundate you with weird new items and gear from the start. Yet, some of these items, like the Prototype Head, will remain mysteriously unused for a good long while. What do you do with it, then?

While the same cannot be said about almost any other item in The Dark Horizon, it’s virtually impossible to miss the Prototype Head. Early on in the DLC, you’ll be riding a tram that basically crashes onto a poor, unsuspecting bot down below. Being the tenured Traveler that you are, you instinctively tear off its head and lug it around just in case it ends up being useful down the line. And, indeed, it does. Though it takes a while.

How to use the Prototype Head in Remnant 2?

The Prototype Head is a part of one of Remnant 2‘s classic item hunt-down questlines, in that you’ll need to find a whole bunch of different thingamajigs before you get to turn them in for your reward. Any Remnant 2 veteran will know what I’m talking about here, and if I’m being honest, The Dark Horizon would’ve been incomplete without one of these.

If you’re anything like me, you’re going to roam around N’Erud’s fancy new post-apocalyptic regions and the odds are good you’ll end up finding all of the different bot parts before the bot’s body. More on those a bit later, though. It’s important that you take note of the specific part of the map where the prototype chassis is suspended, because backtracking to it may otherwise be a pain. You’re looking for a fancy room with an audio log, a corpse, some lootables, and a body suspended from the cables. For reference, check the picture below.

What other body parts do you need?

Since you’re basically kicking off your Dark Horizon adventure with the most important of the prototype bot’s body parts, the good news is that you’re going to be able to talk to it and assess what other bits and bobs it needs. Here’s the full list:

  • Prototype Arm
  • Prototype Claw
  • Prototype Memory Core

Now, due to the randomized nature of Remnant 2, there’s generally no telling as to where, exactly, you might find these items. My suggestion is to keep a close eye on red-glowing loot as you explore The Dark Horizon regions of N’Erud. Those are quite hard to miss even from very far away, and they’re Prototype parts almost every time. Otherwise, you’ll be talking these parts off of other dead bots, so you also wanna be on the lookout for those.

I’m not going to spoil the Prototype Bot’s delightfully weird dialogue and rewards, but something you may want to note is that the Prototype Memory Core, specifically, can be interacted with. Just inspect it in your inventory and turn it around until you reveal the strange button at the top of its chassis. This allows you to toggle between two of the Core’s modes, which likely leads to different quest resolutions and rewards. In other words, we’ll be playing this quest at least twice.
