Following the news that Destiny 2 developer Bungie had eliminated 220 staff and over 100 more are being absorbed by Sony, players have been looking for another game to play. Warframe players have seen something similar happen with other MMOs, and the community is welcoming Destiny 2‘s with open arms.
The Destiny 2 community was shaken by news of these layoffs because the game’s latest expansion, The Final Shape, and its follow-up Episode Echoes content are widely considered to be the best for story and gameplay the title has had in years. I don’t believe there’s a mass exodus of players leaving Destiny 2 just yet, but many are certainly moving away from the game because they don’t know how else to show their disappointment over the layoffs.
Players on the Warframe subreddit have been making it clear that they’re happy and waiting to welcome any and all Destiny 2 players who are looking for a new community to join and MMO to play. While Warframe is a great MMO that doesn’t require you to spend a single penny to enjoy it, it’s nothing like Destiny 2. User Kashm1r_Sp1r1t put it pretty well. “I hope they like Warframe. But please temper their expectations. It’s a VERY different game.”
I really got into Warframe with the release of The Duviri Paradox. While the game is pretty approachable, players must work through 11 years of story before they can tackle the latest content, like the upcoming Warframe: 1999.
Where Destiny 2 requires you to just grind until you get the items you want or need to progress, Warframe has its community. The player base is incredibly positive, and pretty much every request in the marketplace for resources to help you build a specific item is met with more resources that you need from random players you’ve never interacted with.
When I’ve spoken to players in my own journey, it’s become apparent that there’s also not just one endgame to Warframe, but several. Some players chase Fashionframes and grind for cosmetics to make the most beautiful Warframes possible, while others grind for Prime Warframes, weapons, or simply to help others through difficult missions. Destiny 2 definitely has an endpoint after you’ve played through all its content, but in the best way possible, Warframe just never seems to end.
Warframe is a fantastic alternative to Destiny 2, but I don’t believe leaving Destiny 2 is the right response to Bungie’s layoffs. Warframe has thrived because developer Digital Extremes listens to feedback from its players and releases content when it’s ready. If Bungie can do that, there’s a chance everyone leaving Destiny 2 now could return to a better game one day.
