One of the main benefits of playing Valve games on the PC (aside from not getting screwed over on DLC and being free of Microsoft’s evil clutches) is the fact that you get access to a ridiculous amount of mods created by a ravenous community of fans. While Xbox Live will never see that much freedom on its servers, Valve hopes to at least bring a little of the community’s creativity over to home consoles.

One of the things I’d like to do is to allow these modules that are being released on PC to somehow integrate with Microsoft’s system,” says Valve’s Yasser Mailaka. “We’ll have to filter them, we can’t allow any copyrighted materials, so it’s going to have to go through a process … And you know, if they are a paid system, perhaps that could go back to the authors. I think that would be a great story.”

Ha, yeah. That’s one thing you can bet on. Microsoft is sure to expect us to pay for the free, fan-created mods. That’s cool of Valve to consider paying the creators, but seriously, it’s sad that we should be having such a conversation. I love that Valve is bringing Left 4 Dead to consoles, but sometimes I really do wonder if would be better served on the PS3 than the Xbox 360.
