Play me off, Headcrab?

It’s been twenty years since Valve launched Steam. Devised as a way to push updates for games online, Steam blossomed into the juggernaut PC gaming storefront it is today, including hardware like the Valve Index and the Steam Deck. Now, Valve is celebrating its 20th birthday with a sale, commemorating the storefront’s legacy, and the biggest games on the platform throughout the years.

Steam’s Anniversary Sale scores deals on games of yesteryear

Booting up Steam, players will be greeted on the store with a banner for Steam’s 20th anniversary celebration. Valve also redesigned the website’s homepage with a 2003 look. The celebration itself includes heavy discounts on all Valve titles. Alongside this, players will be able to look back on some fun facts from Steam’s history throughout the years. All of which, is accompanied by special art showcasing Valve characters re-enacting notable memes and pop culture references throughout history. Notable pieces on the page include Scout from Team Fortress 2 as Rick Astley and a Keyboard Cat Headcrab. There’s also Chell from Portal speaking her first words ever, those being “I’m sad, Wheatly play Despacito”, and two Counter Strike characters mimicking the Barbie movie mugshots.

There are plenty of Steam sale titles added straight from Valve’s library, of course. Portal, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, and others are among those listed for 90% off. That leaves some of them discounted to less than a dollar, while Half-Life Alyx sits at $20.39.

However, the sale doesn’t only celebrate Valve titles. Under each fun fact from 2003-2023, players will see a list of the top-selling games of that year. Aside from the Valve titles, players can score discounts on games like Arma 3, Total War Rome II: Emporer Edition, Watch Dogs, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!, Assassin’s Creed Origins, and all Call of Duty titles (except Modern Warfare 3 (2011). The ever-popular Battlebit: Remastered is discounted as well.

Valve also took to their official Steam YouTube channel to deliver a thank you message to everyone, which also showcases a Halloween costume of a seductive Steam Deck. Steam’s 20th-anniversary celebration will continue from today until September 19, So players have a chance to celebrate for the rest of the week.
