Supergiant Games has purposefully shown little of Transistor. Enough that its release next Tuesday on PC and PlayStation 4 is anticipated, sure, but playing through the game now, it’s refreshing how much of the experience is new. We’re practically going in blind, which I appreciate.

That said, the studio is letting one additional detail out before release: Recursion mode. Think of it as a new-game-plus option in that your level and Transistor functions carry over. Not everything will be as it was originally, though. “Most notably, the composition of enemy forces you’ll encounter will be different — and it’ll be different just about every time you play.”

Which is super exciting given the way you can mix and match abilities (“functions”). Recursion mode “immediately opens up a lot of new gameplay as you’ll be discovering new function combinations all the way through your initial play-through of the game.”
