“AĀ haunting presence has been detected”

Through a brief tweet, Bungie has announced the next raid forĀ Destiny 2: The Root of Nightmares. It’ll take place within the confines of theĀ Lightfall expansion, and will launch shortly afterward. Here is everything we know about this mysterious raid so far.

What is The Root of Nightmares?

Right now, players are awaiting the arrival of “The Witness” (an alien-like force), who will no doubt cause all sorts of issues for the world of Destiny. For years the team has been wrestling with the dichotomy of dark and light, and how neither is fully in control, or the “right” path to take. This came to a head when Bungie announced that players would be wielding the darkness in Lightfall, teasing new storylines as Guardians tap further into the very power they’ve fought against.

Beyond that context, all we have to go on for The Root of Nightmares raid is this brief description:

“Ferried from an unknown time and place, a haunting presence has been detected. We must now confront the ancient threat growing at our doorstep.”

Even the main site is vague on what the new raid will entail, as they just repeat that same phrase near the bottom of the expansion’s landing page. It could, however, be set inside of a ship in The Black Fleet (those perpetually-teased pyramids).

When does the The Root of Nightmares raid open inĀ Destiny 2?

According to Bungie, The Root of Nightmares will commence on March 10, 2023, at 9AM PT. That’s typically when reset time happens, so everything is inline with most prior releases there.
