The most recent Pokemon Scarlet & Violet patch adds a new way to crash the game

It's during the final battle

If a new patch adds in a bug, no matter how small, the Pokemon community will find it. This one is a tad bigger than a mere annoyance though, as Pokemon Scarlet & Violet version 2.0.1 (which arrived for the Teal Mask DLC) apparently added in a hardware crash.

So here’s how it happens:

  • Get to the final battle of the game
  • Have Miraidon or Koraidon (the box cover legendaries) in your Pokedex
  • Select Pokemon party slots 4-6

As you can see in the above video from Twitter user Mattyoukhana_, the bug triggers as soon as you highlight the fourth or sixth party slot. You can move around slots 1-3 all you want, and even swing around the top to the bottom-most entry of your chosen box Pokemon. But once you hit the slot above it, boom, crash.

As the community points out in the ensuing discussion, you can sidestep the bug by not hovering over the aforementioned slots, or by just not having a full party. For those of you who steamroll battles with just one ‘Mon, you probably won’t even notice it.

Folks are flabbergasted as to how this can happen, as this was evidently added to the base campaign, and didn’t happen in the new DLC zone. But it wouldn’t be a Pokemon game without some puzzling bugs. Ideally, this bug will be spread far and wide, and Game Freak will be able to patch it out at some point. I refrained from typing “swiftly patch out,” because this is Game Freak we’re talking about. We’re still months on from the launch of the game, and a lot of performance issues are still lingering.
