Arthurian roleplay with children

Joel Cornish, the wonderful human who brought us Attack the Block, is back to his antics of young people saving the world, and it looks pretty wonderful. The Kid Who Would Be King is the kind of film I would normally roll my eyes at as a quick cash grab off of the Arthurian legend, but with Cornish both writing and directing, I’m actually excited about it. He has a skill for pulling out the wonder/fear/fun of being a kid and putting it into larger-than-life stories. The trailer looks exactly like that.

I’m sure this is going to be cheesy as all hell — that Mario Kart line basically guarantees it — but I think that’s actually something that a lot of non-animated kids movies lack these days. I don’t know if I’ll eventually proclaim this as a classic of children’s cinema, but judging from this first trailer it will at least be a bit of fun.

Also, Patrick Stewart is in it as Merlin so that pretty much makes it a must watch.

The Kid Who Would Be King will release on March 1, 2019.
