Even though The First Descendant has 14 playable characters at launch, you can only choose from three at the beginning: Ajax, Lepic, and Viessa. Each character has their own playstyle and specialty, but this is The First Descendant best starting character from the three you can choose from at the start.
Best Starting Character
Overall the best starting character in The First Descendant is Ajax. While Lepic and Viessa aren’t bad necessarily, they are simply subpar DPS-focused characters while there are much better options once you unlock the ability to get new characters. Ajax on the other hand is arguably one of the best, if not the best, tank character in The First Descendant.
However, if you don’t plan on playing a tank character ever, Lepic is your best overall DPS option unless you specifically want an Ice-magic centric character in which case you should Viessa.
Whichever character you choose, the other three can still be unlocked later once you obtain the ability to unlock new characters. Therefore, even if you don’t think you will want to play a tank anytime soon, I still recommend going with Ajax.
When can you choose a new character in The First Descendant?
After completing a brief 15-20 minute tutorial you’ll be dropped into the main hub of The First Descendant. From here, you’ll have the option of purchasing any available character rather than just choosing from the three available at the beginning.
If you don’t want to spend money on characters, you can also continue progressing until you reach Magister Anais in Albion. Speaking with Magister Anais will grant you access to the Research Insitute as well as the ability to collect Research Materials and Blueprints to unlock more characters.
Players that are familiar with how Warframe characters unlock will see a lot of similarities with how characters are unlocked in The First Descendant. You simply need to collect the proper pieces to unlock the character blue, and then spend some more resources to unlock the character.
