Nathan For You

The next time you’re in the mood for a point-and-click adventure, you might want to consider VirtuaVerse now that it’s out on Steam and GOG. It’s a cyberpunk romp with “hardware graveyards, digital archaeology, tribes of cryptoshamans, and virtual reality debauchery.” It has shades of They Live!

The hoodie-wearing protagonist, Nathan, smuggles modded hardware in a “not-so-far-away” future.

Society is hellbent on hooking everyone up to a neural network – a new reality that’s “continuously optimizing [the] user experience by processing personal data” – and our boy Nathan is one of the few willing people capable of turning off the augmented virtual reality to see the world through clear eyes.

The game is running with familiar themes, but that can be cozy in its own right.

VirtuaVerse inventory

I’m also very okay with this item-packed inventory screen. Chinese takeout, a broom, goggles, a fire extinguisher, a screwdriver, and a Power Glove – yeah, we’re gonna get into some jams.

VirtuaVerse is an unlikely collaboration between Theta Division and Blood Music, a metal label turned first-time video game publisher. I remember hearing about it ages ago. It’s nice to see it finally land.

Is it just me, or are cyberpunk games really popping off this year?
