Bioware designer William Wallace (amazing!) has just put up a hot blog post explaining (in great detail) some upcoming mechanical implications for The Old Republic’s Legacy System. For those who aren’t in the know, Legacy is basically a mechanic that “links” all of your characters together into one “family”, which allows you to give said characters extra abilities.

Wallace is pretty comprehensive in his post, as he goes into the entire background of the Skywalker family, even mentioning Mara Jade and Ben Skywalker. There’s some pretty sick implications here, as completing Chapter 2 with a character can pass down special buffs to other alts — although abilities will be limited to use with a companion (thus excluding Warzone or Flashpoint/Op use). If you reach level 50, you can even unlock a race for use across all classes, which is pretty awesome from a roleplaying standpoint.

I really wish this was in the game from the start, as I would have been more inclined to play more alts. I think it’s a really novel MMO idea to link alts together, but it doesn’t seem like it’s enough to win back a lot of their userbase that quit after the trial.
