Err, ‘Surprise Box’

It’s hard for me to talk about mystery boxes without thinking of this Family Guy clip. “A mystery box could be anything! It could even be a boat!”

Square Enix has a new mystery box, but the publisher’s pretty up-front about the fact that it won’t contain a boat. Instead, it has some combination of five digital PC games for $10. Supposedly, the contents are worth over $80 (although that was probably upon initial release, and nowhere near what they’re worth now).

Really, this investment isn’t about potentially getting good games at a cheap price. No, you’re buying the thrill of being a badass who sinks their money into the unknown. Whatever Square gives out is just a consolation. You’re on your way to Wall Street, but this mystery box is just the first step.
