After teasing a sequel earlier this month, developer Keen Software House officially announced Space Engineers 2 today, a follow-up to the popular multiplayer space sandbox title. Space Engineers 2 will launch into Early Access via Steam on January 27, 2025.
The original Space Engineers has continued to receive updates for over ten years since being released in 2013, and Keen Software House aims to take everything they’ve learned over the last decade to reimagine the original with more depth, creative freedom, and intuitiveness. Space Engineers 2 will utilize a new in-house engine called VRAGE3 that Keen Software House says will allow both creation and destruction in Space Engineers 2 to look and feel better than ever.
With its Early Access release on January 27, Space Engineers 2 will be in its Alpha stage, allowing players to experiment and build in Creative mode utilizing the games new blueprint tools that adds a lot of fan-requested features like snap-to-grid, copy and paste, toolbar assignments, and the ability to hand craft voxels by hand and use of a flexible painting tool.
The sequel will take place in the Almagest system, a newly discovered and mysterious system that will be fleshed out over the course of Early Access. Looking at the official roadmap for the sequel, Space Engineers 2 will eventually have Mod.io modding support, first-party mod support, a survival mode, new planets, water physics, multiplayer, NPCs, and even an actual story campaign.
As someone with hundreds of hours in the original, I can’t wait to see a refreshed modern take with Space Engineers 2.
