Should you use Technical or Simple Inputs in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising?

Fighting games can be daunting to get into largely due to their unique control scheme and the amount of memorization and practice required. However, titles like Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising are trying to change that with two sets of controls: Simple and Technical Inputs.

By offering different control schemes, the fantasy fighter can cater to a larger audience and potentially bring in new fans. However, this makes me wonder if one control method is inherently better than the other.

What’s the difference between Technical and Simple Inputs in GBVSR?

Put plainly, Simple Inputs offer players a single-button solution that is capable of executing a variety of moves. Technical Inputs require a pattern of button presses to pull off moves. For example, Ferry’s Gespenst can be performed by pressing RB with Simple Inputs whereas Technical Inputs would require 236X, Y, or B.

Simple Inputs are great for those new to GBVSR, those who wish to play it casually, or for testing out new characters without having to memorize a new moveset. One clear advantage for Simple Inputs is the speed at which the attacks can be deployed.

It makes the game and its characters far more approachable, especially for those who don’t know what a quarter-circle move is. Even for those who are familiar with other fighting games and are just now dipping their toes into this one, it makes finding a main that much quicker and allows a smoother transition to Technical Inputs.

Technical Inputs offer a much greater range of control for individual attacks. Each move can have several different variations such as attack speed and power, depending on the button used. It’s a more nuanced way of playing, but offers an unparalleled level of control.

Despite an announcement in July 2023 that Simple and Technical Inputs would be the same across the board, Cygames walked back the decision in an adjustment video in October 2023. Technical Inputs deal an additional 10% damage (not including skills canceled into mid-combo). Finally, as a little pat on the head, players using Technical Inputs will see a “Good!” message appear when using them.

For myself, I tend to prefer Technical Inputs as they force me to learn the game and my character. Plus, it is incredibly satisfying when I master the individual moves and can work them into a combo. That being said, Simple Inputs make it easier to get my wife and son in on the fun. Simple or Technical, everybody wins.
