Bayonetta 1 and 2 before 3

Kamiya once again urges folks to play Bayonetta 1 and 2 before 3

“I think [you] can enjoy the story 100 times more”

Should you play Bayonetta 1 and 2 before 3? Well, you don’t have to! But producer Hideki Kamiya thinks you should.

We’ve been through this before in the past. As recently as four months ago, Kamiya noted that folks who played the original two games would get more out of the threequel, which is still slated for later this year. Now he’s taken to Twitter this week to reiterate that this is still his stance.

Here’s what he says, roughly translated:

“Somehow I wanted to say this again, but if you are thinking of playing Bayonetta 3, I definitely want you to play Bayonetta 1 and Bayonetta 2 by now … I think that person can enjoy the story 100 times more.”

Kamiya notes that with the second game, he “intentionally created a story where you can play it in any order” and not be too lost. But with Bayonetta 3, he worked on the story in such a way that he assumes enough people are aware of the series to have played it, and wanted to make the world-building elements “more profound” with that background informing the audience. He goes on to share this “introductory video” of the first two games (which is in Japanese).

Naturally, if Bayonetta 3 is anything like its predecessors, it’ll stand on its own two feet as an action game, even if you skip the entire story. But I really want to see what the third game has up its sleeve now that we have a full-on universe on our hands at this point.

Kamiya answers the question: “Should you play Bayonetta 1 and 2 before 3?”
