Sega Nerds is reporting that Sega Studios, formerly known as Secret Level Studios, will be shut down today. The San Francisco studio was responsible for titles such as Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Iron Man and the upcoming Iron Man 2 game. No specifics are given but it’s easy to guess why with the studio’s track record.
We’ve reached out to our own contacts at Sega who confirm of the studio’s closer. To clarify, this is just the development studio that is shutting down. Sega of America is still up and kicking in San Francisco.
As for their last project, we just brought you a preview of Iron Man 2 and the movie tie-in is still scheduled for release next month. It’s always a shame when a studio closes and we wish the best of luck to everyone on the job hunt.
[Update: Sega has confirmed the closure of the studio with Industry Gamers.
“Sega of America is sad to announce the closure of Sega Studios San Francisco,” a rep said. “It is an immensely talented studio and we wish all the best to all of the staff in all their future endeavors. Moving forward, Sega will continue to pursue external development opportunities all over the world and will continue to grow the renowned Sega brand.”
