I guess Disney isn’t done spelunking through their 16-bit catalog since it just announced the 1995’s Gargoyles Sega Genesis platformer is getting a full remaster. It’s coming to Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 19, 2023.
Do you remember Gargoyles? I caught the odd episode as a youngun and really enjoyed it, but I was more into watching Warner Bros cartoons. I thought about watching it when I was older, but everyone says the show takes a sudden and abrupt dive in quality at some point. I’m not sure why that bothers me, plenty of shows are good until they’re bad, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worthwhile.
The Gargoyles game debuted in 1995 exclusively for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It was fine. Some would define it as a game that doesn’t suck. I put it more in the camp of 1995’s Toy Story. It’s a licensed game, so you should set your expectations there, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Unlike Disney’s previous 16-bit re-releases, Gargoyles Remastered is getting a full art style update and soundtrack upgrade. It looks pretty good, but it’s obviously built over the old game and does some awkward things with perspective and animation. However, if you don’t like it, you can simply toggle it back to 16-bit mode.
It’s, uh, a bit of a weird choice for a remaster, but I welcome revisiting any, so bring it on.
Gargoyles Remastered is coming to Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It is scheduled to be released on October 19, 2023, for $14.99 USD. There will also be a physical version available via Limited Run Games.
