Ubisoft has announced that it’s teamed up with DC Comics’ WildStorm on a comic book based in the Driver universe. The first issue (or rather, “Issue 0”) will be given away at Comic Con this week for lucky attendees; the book features a special cover drawn by Jock (best known for his work on The Losers), who will also be on hands at Comic Con for signings (schedule after the jump).

The comic will fill in the events following Driv3r and the upcoming Driver: San Francisco, delving deeper into protagonist John Tanner’s past and his hunt for crime boss Charles Jericho. The book will written by David Lapham and illustrated by Greg Scott, with direction by the game’s developer, Ubisoft Reflections. Reflection’s creative director Martin Edmondson calls comics the “perfect fit” for the Driver universe.

“We could tell the story in a gritty, hard-edged fashion using cinematic visuals and emotional pieces,” he’s quoted as saying in the official announcement, “yet in a palatable and mainstream medium.”

Driver: San Francisco
is out early next year for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and Mac.
