Rodent-positive action-RPG Tails of Iron 2 releases in February

This is bat country.

United Label and Odd Bug Studio have announced that Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter, the sequel to their 2021 action-RPG, will be released in February 2025 for PC and consoles. This is technically a delay from their planned 2024 release, but only slightly.

For some reason, rodents make the best fantasy protagonists, as proven by Redwall and Ghost of a Tale. Writing for Destructoid at the time, Chris Moyse gave the first Tails of Iron a 7.5 in a review laced with praise, calling it ā€œone of the yearā€™s most distinctive RPG experiences.ā€

Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter moves the action far to the north. You play as Arlo, ā€œheir to the Warden of the Wastes.ā€ The game is a sidescrolling, soulslike, dark fantasy game. After the Frog/Rat war, Bats rise up as a threat. Arlo has to travel the northern wastes in an effort to ā€œHunt down giant beasts. Unite disparate clans. Upgrade your settlement. And discover a terrible secret of blood and crownā€¦ā€ Rad.

Moyseā€™s review got me interested in Tails of Iron, but I have to be honest with you: it occupies this space that is high enough to make me consider buying it but low enough on my priorities where Iā€™m not sure Iā€™ll ever play it. The side-scroller genre is so packed these days. I can barely even look at a game with ā€œmetroidvaniaā€ in the description. I donā€™t hate these types of games; itā€™s just that Iā€™ve played so many of them throughout my life that itā€™s hard to get excited. I donā€™t have time between games that have seized my attention anymore. Once I finish one, itā€™s onto another. Though, truly, Iā€™m often playing multiple games in tandem; alternating between them.

What Iā€™m saying is that Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter looks great. You should play it, and then Iā€™ll live vicariously through your experience.

Tails of Iron 2 releases in February 2025 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.
