Right after the release of his album
Beloved actor and singer/songwriter David Bowie passed away last night in his home in New York City after a bout with cancer. Like many multimedia icons before him, you don’t necessarily immediately associate video games with Bowie, but his presence permeated throughout the industry. Not only did his likeness grace the Commodore 64 version of the Labyrinth game, but he also appeared in Omicron: Nomad’s Soul, and has influenced countless developers with his personality and spirit for decades on end.
Bowie was apparently fighting until the very end, and even dropped a brand new album, Blackstar, this week, which was released to critical acclaim. I personally learned about Bowie by way of the film Labyrinth as a child, and picked up multiple albums of his immediately after viewing it, journeying through the galaxy with his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie is survived by his wife Iman, and son, Duncan Jones, who is currently working on the Warcraft film.
