Risk of Rain 2 devs hint at DLC boss False Son’s tragic origins

False Son, true end.

Now that the new DLC for Risk of Rain 2 has been officially revealed under the title Seekers of the Storm, Gearbox has begun its pre-release promotional campaign for it. Its first major checkpoint? A short discussion of Seekers of the Storm‘s main villain, the ominous-sounding False Son.

More specifically, Gearbox’s first official Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm developer diary is about the DLC’s all-new final boss and the lore behind its existence. Though lore hasn’t historically been a huge draw in Risk of Rain or its highly acclaimed sequel, Risk of Rain 2, it’s worth highlighting that the franchise has a significant narrative backlog going in the background of all the killing. And now, the False Son represents the consequences of what the Survivors have been doing on the planet Petrichor V.

Risk of Rain 2’s False Son is a tragic figure

In the events leading to Seekers of the Storm, the survivors of both the first and the second game’s respective planetfalls have taken on god-like entities, Providence and Mithrix, in order to escape Petrichor V. In the background, a mysterious creation of these entities aims to break free, terrifying the lizard-like Lemurian creatures who used to worship and adore Providence and Mithrix. To protect themselves, Lemurians create the False Son, as per Gearbox’s Kayla Larson, resident Risk of Rain loremaster, who adds that Mithrix ends up corrupting the False Son for his own purposes.

This already sets the stage for the False Son to be one of Risk of Rain‘s most tragic boss encounters yet, and Associate Art Lead Claire Bian suggests that there’s more to the story yet. “[The False Son] is crucial for the lore,” she said, adding that she is “really excited about when the players who he actually is in the game.”

Seekers of the Storm‘s ultimate encounter is, then, supposed to be quite a big deal all on its own, and it’s bound to give ROR loreheads plenty to think about and discuss. The official release date for Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm is currently unknown, but it’s bound to be coming relatively soon.
