Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami may have birthed us a famous horror series, but he is currently spurning it. The ex-Capcom man is refusing to play Resident Evil 5, claiming it will cause him too much stress to do so.
“I probably won’t play it. I won’t like it, because it’s not going to be the game I would have made,” explains Mikami. “It’ll just cause me stress if I play it. I think it could be fun for gamers to play it, but not for someone who has developed Resident Evil games.
“If I see anything in Resident Evil 5 that isn’t done well, I’ll be angry!”
And you wouldn’t like Shinji Mikami when he’s angry.
Seriously though, it must be difficult for a game maker once a franchise has been wrested from his hands, having to watch other people develop it and take the IP in directions you had never intended. It would be like a musician being forced to hand over his instruments to someone else and watching a totally different person play under their name.
Still, Mikami is with Platinum now, a company that is showing amazing potential. Perhaps it’s best that he’s devoting his time to Suda 51 projects and secret Sega shenanigans, rather than waste time playing those no good videogames.
