PSA: Nightingale Essence is easy to farm with a Water Bottle trick

It was fun while it lasted

If there’s one thing you’re always going to want a lot of in Nightingale, it’s Essence. The currency can be used to purchase Blueprints, resources, and items to help you survive in the Fae Realms. Essences are usually gained by extracting from items or completing encounters, but I’ve found a better way.

Once you reach your Abeyance Realm, you’ll be instructed to head out and find the Essence Trader. They can be found on the Western side of the map, at the base of the Antiquarian Site of Power. They’ve got a lot of items for sale and one of them, the Water Bottle, is your ticket to vast quantities of Essence, at least for now.

How to get endless Essences

Under the “Item, Consumable, Potion” portion of the Essence Trader’s menu, you’ll find something called “Water Bottle (Water)”. This item will cost you 10 Essences, but you get four of them each time you purchase.

Now comes the fun part that you should take advantage of; the stack of four Water Bottles that you just purchased can then be Extracted via your inventory, and you’ll receive not 10, but 40 Essences by doing so. Essentially, for every 10 Essences you spend, you’ll quadruple the amount of Essences you get back

Water Bottle min-maxing, TLDR:

  • Locate your Abeyance Realm’s Essence Trader
  • Buy (1) pack of (4) Water Bottles for (10) Essence Dust
  • Extract Water Bottles into (40) Essence Dust
  • Repeat and profit

In the interest of being thorough, I spent 11,430 Essences on Water Bottles, and in under five minutes of buying and Extracting, I ended up with 45,720 Essences. That’s enough Essences to buy everything you could ever need, at least within the Abeyance Realm.

There is a downside to this hack, though. You can only buy one lot of Water Bottles at a time, so if you plan to do this I recommend using your Space Bar rather than your mouse button. It takes a long time, especially if you’re buying a lot and at some point you’re going to run out of inventory space.

I’m expecting this quick route to Essence wealth to be removed in a future patch, so now is the time to make the most of it if you want to get a headstart.

Water Bottle exploit removed in patch 0.1.1

Image via Inflexion

March 6 saw the first major update for Nightingale and among a long list of additions and tweaks, the sad news emerged that this Water Bottle exploit had been removed, along with another exploit which allowed Rock to be turned into Ammo.

Hopefully you managed to amass vast amounts of Essence while this exploit was live, but if you didn’t, you can still earn essences by taking part in Encounters, exploring Fae Portals and defeating creatures within the Fae Realms.
