The film adaptation of Prince of Persia has finally gotten a release date of July 10th, 2009. As of right now, that seems appropriate, considering the film is supposed to be a summer blockbuster, but has yet to get any actors or a director. As of now, it has been rumored that Michael Bay would direct the film, but that’s just rumors.
The film has been sitting around for a while — it’s been mentioned back in my original “Upcoming video game movies” post. Quoth IGN:
The Prince of Persia movie has been in development at Walt Disney Pictures since 2004, with the game’s creator Jordan Mechner having penned a script with screenwriter John August supervising.
Now, those are words I like to hear as well. The fact that the script is mainly being written by the game’s creator is more good than bad. I mean, there’s the fact that 80% of the game, save for the beginning and end, are just hack ‘n slash and puzzle solving, but otherwise, it means that he will better understand what people liked about the game, and thus focus on and adapt more of that into the movie.
The director will make a big impact on how this ends up, but at least with Jerry Bruckheimer producing this, it means that money won’t be much of a consideration when it comes to who they’ll be getting for the film.
[Thanks, Adam!]
