I hope you didn’t have anything pressing to do over PSN during the day today. Joystiq is reporting that the service will be offline today from 11 AM until 4 PM (Pacific time). It probably won’t impact users in the US all that much, what with people being at school and work, but it does fall right in the middle of peak gaming time over in Europe which is bound to annoy somebody today.
As to what Sony is doing with their five hours? They were calling it “essential maintenance,” but have since announced that the 2.5 firmware will be available tomorrow, so that’s probably what they’re up to. The update will enable players to take screenshots, add an auto-off feature for controllers and introduce more expanded video playback options.
You still have a little bit of time to download a PSN game or get another quick multiplayer match in. And, hey, at least they won’t be down for 24 hours.
