An interview with Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia) and Eric Chahi (Out of This World aka Another World) about inspiration in game design is bound to be phenomenal, but when you slip in an excellent piece of news right inside the article, you’ve got yourself a home run.
First, the news bit: Chahi is working on a new game! After explaining his break from the industry post-Heart of Darkness, he revealed — much to the delight of a good number of us — that he has “been working with a team on a new game for a year and a half now.”
The anticipation, it kills! While that really isn’t much to go on, anyone who has played Out of This World will know how potentially drool-worthy this announcement is. Before you lose yourself pondering about what Chahi’s game might be like, you should take a few moments to read the full interview.
As I alluded to before, hearing from these two great minds in one place makes for a terrific read. Also, Mechner drops one hell of an amazing quote:
“If you immerse yourself too single-mindedly in your chosen art form, whether it’s video games, movies, comics or whatever, your work can easily become just a reflection of what others are doing in that field, rather than breaking new ground. A game should be about something, not just about other games.”
So good.
