Them handhelds are still kicking!
When it came time to start going through the nomination process for the Destructoid Game of the Year awards, I honestly wasn’t sure if we were going to have a Best Portable category. Both the 3DS and Vita have had good runs, the latter of the two lasting far longer than many people anticipated, but it’s clear the sun is setting on both devices as people move on to Switch and…well actually just Switch.
But then I saw the nominees and the wide range of quality games we got this year, and it made perfect sense that we’d still keep this category around. I spent well over 100 hours with a few of the games nominated this year and looking at 2019’s release calendar, I wouldn’t be shocked if this category makes one final appearance next December.
These are the nominees for Best Portable Game of 2018:
- Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Dillon’s Dead-Heat Breakers
- Iconoclasts
- Luigi’s Mansion
- Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
- WarioWare Gold
