The Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware specs have been revealed as part of its presentation, and it’s sounding like a big evolution of the original console.
The handheld version of the console will support up to 120 FPS and 1080p resolution, which is obviously a massive upgrade over the original, and even higher than the Steam Deck. It also features 3D audio support and improved speakers with clearer audio, and a built-in microphone.
The screen is unfortunately an LCD and not OLED, but it will support HDR. The JoyCons include bigger SL/SR buttons, larger sticks, and the long-rumored mouse-like controls. The Switch 2 console has two USB-C ports, 256GB base storage, and will be backwards compatible with Switch 1 games.
The new console gets serious when it’s in docked mode. The new Nintendo Switch 2 dock will allow for upscaled resolution up to 4K and HDR, fan ventilation, and more, allowing for a more modern console experience than the Switch 1 offered.
New and existing games will be offered with Switch 2 versions to take care of the stronger hardware, offering higher resolution, frame rate, and mouse support, such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
More specific information about the Switch 2’s hardware will be coming over time ahead of the console’s launch on June 5, but there’s enough here to get excited about the big improvements.
