Netflix’s Tomb Raider the Legend of Lara Croft gets an action-packed trailer

Netflix has finally revealed the teaser trailer for Tomb Raider the Legend of Lara Croft, starring Hayley Atwell. After two different iterations of flesh and bone Tomb Raider on the big screen, fans can now catch a glimpse of what Netflix’s adventures of Lara Croft in animated format will look like:

For the sake of clarity, it’s important to note that the series isn’t based on Tomb Raider: Legend. The Legend Of Lara Croft takes place an unspecified amount of time after the events of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, the final game in the rebooted “Survivor Trilogy”. Legend Of The Tomb Raider will seemingly try to bridge the gap between the latest games, where Lara goes on adventures with her friends, to the classic Lara, who searches for the most perilous situations all on her own.

While Netflix hasn’t advanced much about the plot yet, we know things are put in motion once one of Lara’s artifacts gets stolen from the Croft Manor. There’s also the introduction of a grey-haired man who’s likely connected to Lara’s past, or perhaps to the past of her family, but we’re yet to learn more about him.

Though the emphasis here will be on the most modern version of Lara, it doesn’t look like fans of the old games will be left completely out to dry, as a few references to the classics can be spotted in the trailer.

It really doesn’t look like it will lack fan service, as this teaser seems to even pick up on the more horror-oriented direction for the series that the developers had at some point considered taking.

The trailer also shows various different set pieces featuring some really promising animation, with the scene where Lara escapes a flood on her motorcycle really catching my eye.

Can Netflix pull off Tomb Raider?

Tomb Raider adaptations are yet to reach a level of quality that leaves both fans and regular moviegoers completely satisfied. It’s a tough job, as isolated exploration and platform jumping are what put the series on the video game map, but that just doesn’t translate very well into blockbuster action.

Still, Netflix has hosted some excellent, and certainly harder to adapt, animated series with the likes of Castlevania and Arcane; heck, this Tomb Raider comes by way of Castlevania studio Powerhouse Animation. This is probably the best bet we have in the realm of possible Tomb Raider adaptations. Tomb Raider the Legend of Lara Croft will be available on Netflix on October 10.
