Monster Hunter Wilds: How to find Gypceros in the Plains (Beware the Gypceros quest)

Get this creature to spawn in the Plains!

While most large monsters are easy to find, the Gypceros proves the most troublesome in Monster Hunter Wilds. Oftentimes, it won’t spawn right away, prohibiting you from completing Zatoh’s side mission. We’re here to help by showing you how to find Gypceros in the Plains.

How to get the Gypceros to spawn in Windward Plains

The Gypceros appears during the Fallow weather, which you can change in the Rest’s Environment settings. However, even with this feature, many players have still been unable to get this creature to spawn. So, if you’re struggling to find the Gypceros in the Plains, here are a few methods you can use:

  • Check on your Environment Overview to narrow down its location
  • Capture the Gypceros in another region, then return to the Plains to see if spawns in
  • Look around Kunafa Village or Zone 4

The first thing you need to do is check on your Environment Overview. You’ll see a button to open it at the bottom of your map. It’ll present you with all the currently available monsters in the Windward Plains, where you may see the Gypceros pop up. If you have yet to catch or hunt this beast, it will appear as a ‘???’ creature. Set a waypoint to reach there quickly.

Unfortunately, the Environment Overview rarely shows a Gypceros, especially when the Beware the Gypceros Material Retrieval side quest is active. Defeating this monster in other regions is the only way I could resolve this issue, as it seems to refresh the monsters within the Plains. Regions like the Iceshard Cliffs, Oilwell Basin, and Wyveria spawn the Gypceros more frequently. Therefore, you can easily find this creature, take it down, and then return to the Plains for better chances.

If the problem persists, explore Windward Plains to trigger a Gypceros appearance in the wilds. Players in the ‘Can’t find the Gypceros’ Reddit thread suggest looking around Kunafa Village or Zone 4 (above the Base Camp) to encounter this creature.

Hopefully, one of these methods helps you find the Gypceros in the Plains. However, you’ll still need to defeat the monster to complete the rest of the Beware the Gypceros mission.

How to defeat the Gypceros in MH Wilds

In addition to Gypceros’ rare sightings, it’s also relatively challenging to eliminate. It has the power to stun and poison you, so ensure to come prepared with resources. I highly recommend bringing Antidotes or Herbal Medicines to counter Poison Status Effects. Here’s a list of the Gypceros’ weaknesses in MH Wilds:

  • Weak Point: Head
  • Recommended Elemental Attacks: Fire and Ice
  • Effective Status Effects:
    • Poison: Least effective
    • Sleep: Moderately effective
    • Paralysis: Moderately effective
    • Blastblight: Moderately effective
    • Stun: Moderately effective
    • Exhaust: Moderately effective
  • Effective Item: Pitfall Trap

Shock Traps won’t do you any good in this battle, but Pitfall Traps will prove handy. While the head is the Gypceros’ weakest point, it’s best to pinpoint its tail first since it’ll be more accessible to hit.

You must be agile during this fight to avoid its many stun and poison attacks. Weapons like the Dual Blades and the Insect Glaive can help, but you can opt for other types if they better suit your playstyle.

Once you’ve defeated the Gypceros, return to Kunafa Village to speak to Zatoh. He’ll reward you with Carbalite Ore for upgrades and the Sharp Kunafa Cheese meal ingredient.
