Minecraft releases DLC inspired by the BBC’s Planet Earth show

Will you be a gutsy shark or a playful seal?

Still the gaming behemoth it’s been since it was released over twelve years ago, Minecraft continues to sell in droves. Much of that is its mass appeal of allowing near-infinite build potential. But the recent release of the Planet Earth III DLC probably isn’t hurting things, either.

Inspired by the BBC documentary of the same name, the latest Minecraft content brings more of the natural world to the blocky sandbox game. But it goes beyond just pretty animals. A recent post on the official website gives details on what’s in the DLC.

For example, there are a number of scenarios for you to take part in. You can become a fur seal who has to “steer clear of predators,” or be the shark that’s preying on the blubbery pinniped. There’s also a chance to become a musk ox or an arctic wolf as you’re “transported to the Canadian tundra in spring.”

No narration from Sir David Attenborough, as far as I can tell

Oh, there are quite a few of these scenarios for you to take part in. And when you’re done frolicking about the place like a spry impala, you can also check out the BBC Planet Earth Field Station hub.

To this day, it’s still quite mind-boggling to see how far this game came from its humble beginnings. With the Minecraft movie now in development, there’s some life left to be squeezed out of this ungodly successful IP.

The Planet Earth III content is available now for free for Minecraft: Education Edition and on the marketplace for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
