We all knew that Mega Man 9 was a highly anticipated title, but it seems that Capcom’s 8-bit retrogasm has been more than just a little bit successful, mercilessly smashing WiiWare records and accruing an almighty 60,000 downloads in just one day.
After going on sale in the Americas yesterday, Mega Man 9 has outsold all but six WiiWare games’ lifetime sales totals, and will most likely leave the entire library in the dust as downloads continue. It’s being suggested that after a full week of availability, the game will not only beat the sales of every other WiiWare title, but every single Virtual Console release as well.
Regardless of whether or not you’re into Mega Man, this is very good news indeed. What this proves is that you can provide a traditional, challenging, very hardcore videogame in the modern world and have it succeed. Especially on the Wii of all places, this is encouraging stuff. Other publishers take note — there is still a market for real games, and judging by these sales, the market is ravenous.
