In Tears of the Kingdom, a terrible sandstorm has gripped Gerudo, making it harder than ever to traverse the unforgiving desert. A Hyrulean named Ponthos has gotten lost in the sandstorm, and it is up to Link to rescue him. Although Link has access to plenty of weapons, this will be a challenge that relies far more on brains.

Having trouble finding Ponthos? This guide will help you complete the Lost in the Dunes side quest in Tears of the Kingdom.

How to start the Lost in the Dunes side quest in Tears of the Kingdom

To begin the quest, you’ll have to head to the Kara Kara Bazaar. It lies at the beginning of the Gerudo Desert. You can get there by warping to Mayatat Shrine or by taking a walk from Gerudo Canyon Stable. The coordinates of the bazaar are: -3268, -2579, 0023.

There, Link will meet a group of men who are distressed because their leader, Ponthos, is missing. Because of the bad weather, it is probably best to put aside this quest until you have dealt with Gerudo’s Regional Phenomenon. When you do start the quest, bring along rock-breaking weapons such as the Cobble Crusher, and ensure you have Yonubo’s Sage unlocked. You’ll also need some heat-resistant clothing or food.

Where to find Ponthos in Gerudo Desert

Ponthos isn’t too far from the bazaar. Head out the west exit and you’ll spot a campfire burning beside a sinkhole. The coordinates are: -3351, 2663, 0031. Jump into the sinkhole to continue your search.

Underground, you’ll find a cave system with a stream running through it. It’s worthwhile to explore the entire cave system on your own and collect resources, but if you’re looking for a straight path out, here you go.

Follow the stream and break the wall of rocks it leads to. Continue following the stream, breaking all rocks in your path. It does get tedious but you will eventually reach the end of the stream where the missing Hyrulean is located.

He’ll find his own way back out now that you’ve cleared the way. Use Ascend to return to ground level, then race back to Kara Kara Bazaar. Ponthos and his men will thank you for the help and you’ll be rewarded with a cumbersome orb that can’t even be placed in your inventory. Although it may seem useless, the orb is used for a separate side quest called The Heroine’s Secret.

While you’re in the Gerudo Desert, visit Chichim Shrine to collect another Light of Blessing. Defeating monsters along the way will also earn you weapons such as the Gerudo Scimitar.
