The latest issue of Nintendo Power is reportedly chock full of information and pics of the upcoming Sonic RPG for the Nintendo DS, now known to be called Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Crafted by BioWare, creator of the RPG hits Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, this game has me excited by its pedigree alone. According to the NP article, Sonic Chronicles will feature turn-based combat, “simple” dialog trees, fully animated cut scenes, and the return of everyone’s favorite Totoro knock-off Big the Cat. Scans of the issue can be seen at French site Jeux-France.

Admittedly, the whole concept of a BioWare-developed Sonic RPG still has me befuddled. Sonic games are best when they are fast, short on story, and long on “mousetrap” style level designs. BioWare games are best when they are slow, big on story, and filled with alien/human pillow talk. It’s like if Square-Enix were announced to be working on GTA puzzle game. I have no idea what to expect.
