Lethal Company’s Skinwalkers mod mimics your friends’ voices

Lethal Karaoke

Once again, the modding community of the mega-hit Lethal Company has proven that there’s no limit to human inventiveness ā€” nor wickedness.

While most players are still having difficulty catching their breath on a match-to-match basis, a modder named RugbugRedfern has jumped ahead of the curve to come up with what I think is the scariest mod in the history of the game. And yeah, I’ve played that one with the doors that eat you. It’s time you learn about the “Skinwalkers” mod.

What’s a Skinwalker in Lethal Company?

In Navajo legend, a “skin-walker” is a type of witch who’s capable of transforming into, controlling, or even impersonating animals for nefarious purposes. In the mythology of this mod, a Skinwalker is even worse. Instead of giving the monsters that live in the game’s exomoons the ability to mimic animals, it empowers the monsters with the ability to mimic lines previously spoken by your teammates. It’s very scary, yeah, but it’s even better at getting you killed.

How to get the Skinwalkers mod running

Skinwalkers requires a few more steps to get running properly than most of Lethal Company’s other mods, but I doubt you’ll regret it. First, I recommend you download a mod manager called r2modman from the Thunderstore website.

Once you have manually downloaded it, double click on “r2modman Setup” to install this mod manager. Run it once the setup is done. It’ll ask you to pick a game, so let’s type in Lethal Company to facilitate our search. Once you see it, click on Select Game.

Then, we’ll have to keep on using r2modman to find the Skinwalkers mod. Once you find it, click download and choose download with dependencies. This will download the mod as well as the BepinEx pack that we need for all other Lethal Company mods.

If Skinwalkers is the only mod you have installed, your manager should look like this:

Now, whether you just want to have the base Skinwalker mod experience or want configuration options to get the best out of the mod, you’ll need to press the Start modded button at the top left corner of your screen before you do anything else. This is how you generate the file that you’ll later configure to have the mod fit your tastes.

If you don’t do that, clicking on Config Editor won’t show you the file you need because it won’t exist yet. Below is what you don’t want to see.

If you do things right, the configuration editor menu will look like this:

There’s a new file, the one called RugbugRedfern. Click on it and then on the Edit Config button that will pop up. This will open a menu with two different sections. In the Monster Voices section, you’ll see the name of every monster in the game followed by either “true” or “false”. Set it to true for whatever monster you want to hear mimicking your teammates.

In the second section, Voice Settings, you get to pick how often the monsters will mimic your teammate’s voice lines.

Now just note that for it to function, Skinwalkers requires everyone in your session to have it installed. With that being said, you’re good to go!

Shaky ground

Other developers have tried to make use of this sort of trick before. You see, a similar mechanic to the mimicking one introduced by this mod was once going to be used in Predator: Hunting Grounds.

The Predator almost got to make use of his trademark ability of recording and playing back the sounds made by his prey, but then the devs realized that recording other players was straight-up illegal. I sure hope the developers behind this mod have found the way to do it on the legal side of things, otherwise it might run into issues.
