LEGO sets are cool and all, but I’ve always been more fascinated by the minifigs that come with the sets. With a bit of creativity, you can customize your own plastic avatar. With even more creativity, you can recreate some of your favorite pop culture icons… like from Dragon Ball Z, for instance.

LEGO bricklayer Julian Fong has spent a good year whipping up his own batch of Street Fighter II minifigs. The entire cast is represented, save for Fei Long in order to keep an even 16 count. He used custom decals for torsos and legs then hand-painted a few extra details. The results are fairly spot-on, even if there are a few oddities, like Zangief’s wild Mr. T mohawk.

Julian decided to submit his SFII set to LEGO CUUSOO in the hopes of turning it into an official LEGO release, but unfortunately, it was rejected on the grounds that the source brand “contains content or themes that do not fit the LEGO Group’s standards for appropriate content.” Of course, the LEGO Portal set was initially rejected for the same nebulous reason but later reinstated, so there’s hope yet for Mr. Fong.

Speaking of LEGO Portal, I had originally thought it was turned down due to copyright issues, but according the LEGO CUUSOO’s terms of service, LEGO negotiates terms with the IP holder in such cases. Know what that means? A Mega Man Robot Master set is gonna happen one of these days! Mark my words!
