Microsoft Studios needed to find a new development partner to work on Killer Instinct after Amazon went and acquired Double Helix Games, and its selection has turned out to be spot on. Divekick and Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Online Edition developer Iron Galaxy will pick up where the original studio left off for a second season of Killer Instinct content.

Speaking to Polygon, Iron Galaxy CEO Dave Lang said the company had previously pitched its take on Killer Instinct to Microsoft back before Double Helix was chosen but it wasn’t staffed to work on it and Wreckateer simultaneously. “It’s, like, the one that got away,” he explained.

Continuing, Lang said “If we were going to work on this game and go, ‘Oh, we want to change everything,’ if we were in that position, it’d be a mess. I’m not sure if we would have taken the gig. What they have is not [broken]. What they have is amazing, and it’s good, and we just want to layer new stuff on top of that that keeps the pace intact.”

In the more immediate future, Killer Instinct is getting the character we’ve all been waiting for it to get, Fulgore, on April 9 in a season-one update that also includes Arcade Mode.
