Demanding a sacrifice
Daniel Mullins Games is best known for creating Pony Island and The Hex, and if you’ve played either of those titles, you’ll know they’ve got a real knack for making some interesting experiences. Their newest game, Inscryption, just released a trailer today, and it looks like they’re finally going to stop playing coy with the satanic undertones for this latest outing.
According to the press release, Inscryption is “a narrative-focused, card-based odyssey that blends the deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror … ” Personally, I’ve never actually played any standalone card games outside of Solitaire before, so I’m not one-hundred percent sure what to make of this one from a technical perspective. However, I’m absolutely on board for it based solely on the fact that it’s a Daniel Mullins Games joint. Their work is all about experimental design and attempting to tell unique stories in interesting ways.
The trailer itself starts out somewhat standard fare but quickly transitions to three different styles of pixel artwork and even what looks like some live-action footage. Also, there are a lot of demon-looking things and the words “SACRIFICES MUST BE MADE” shaking across the screen. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say they’re not talking about counting calories or giving things up for Lent, but this is from Daniel Mullins Games, so it very well may be.
We’ll just have to wait and see when Inscryption releases for PC in 2021.
