How to use the Artifact Transmuter in Genshin Impact – Sanctifying Elixirs explained

Starting from Version 5.0, Genshin Impact has a new way to create artifacts with custom stat loadouts. Of course, there are limitations. Here’s everything you need to know about the Artifact Transmuter in Genshin Impact, including how to obtain and use it.

How to get the Artifact Transmuter in Genshin Impact

Before we get started, you need to own the Artifact Transmuter. This gadget can be obtained from the Adventurer’s Handbook.

1. Open the Adventurer’s Handbook (F1 on PC).
2. Click the Embattle tab toward the bottom left.
3. Use the arrow keys toward the top to turn to Chapter IV.
4. Claim your Artifact Transmuter at the top of the list.

You need to have obtained at least 25 5-star artifacts before you can claim the Artifact Transmuter. This shouldn’t be an issue if you’ve been playing Genshin Impact for any length of time. If you don’t meet this requirement, don’t worry. You can farm 5-star artifacts fairly easily once you reach Adventure Rank 45, but you’ll start earning them naturally before that.

How to use the Artifact Transmuter in Genshin Impact

The process of creating an artifact is called Defining. You can Define one artifact of each artifact set per Version. For example, if you Define a Viridescent Venerer piece, you must wait for the next Version update to Define another Viridescent Venerer piece. But you can Define a Marechausee Hunter piece right away.

To use the Artifact Transmuter to Define a custom artifact, follow the steps below.

1. Go to your inventory and use your Artifact Transmuter in your Gadgets bag.
2. Choose your desired artifact set from the list on the left.
3. Choose the piece you want to create. Flowers and feathers cost one Sanctifying Elixir, sands cost two, circlets cost three, and goblets cost four.
4. Choose your desired main stat and two substats.
5. Select “Define” to consume your Sanctifying Elixir(s) and obtain your custom artifact!

As long as you pick different artifact sets, you can Define as many artifacts as you like, provided you have enough Sanctifying Elixirs. These are a limited resource, though, with precious few available through repeatable means.

How to get Sanctifying Elixirs in Genshin Impact

Now that you know how to use the Transmuter, you need Sanctifying Elixirs to start crafting custom artifacts. The most reliable way to obtain those is to extract them from your existing leveled artifacts. Take these steps to convert your artifacts into a Sanctifying Elixir.

1. Go to your inventory and use your Artifact Transmuter in your Gadgets bag.
2. Select the Artifact Extraction tab at the top.
3. Select the artifacts you want to consume. They can only be 5-star artifacts of level 4 or higher, and each artifact grants a different amount of points.
4. Once you reach 100 points, select Extract to create your Sanctifying Elixir.

You can only convert artifacts into a Sanctifying Elixir once per Version. More Sanctifying Elixirs can be earned by exploring Natlan’s open world or reaching level 26 on the premium Battle Pass (Gnostic Hymn). There may also be Sanctifying Elixirs included in event rewards, like the anniversary rewards that will be mailed to all players during Version 5.0.
