How to upgrade and modify W-Engines in Zenless Zone Zero

Keep your tech up to date for maximum efficiency.

W-Engines can seem daunting and overwhelming in Zenless Zone Zero. They’re gear that you must equip your Agents with in order to enhance their combat abilities and allow you to fight tougher and tougher foes. But getting your head around how they work and upgrading and modifying them is another matter.

It took me ages to get my head around W-Engines. You can go for ages without messing around with them at all, but you’ll eventually need to engage with the system if you want to push your Agents as far as they can go and have some serious firepower when you head into missions. It’s not a part of the game you want to ignore, especially if, like me, you want to complete the regular milestones for upgrading and modifying them.

To upgrade W-Engines in Zenless Zone Zero, you must open your Agent menu and navigate to their Equipment tab. Select their W-Engine and then navigate to the gear’s level on the right-hand side of the screen. This is where you can upgrade the level of your W-Engines to their current maximum.

It’s pretty much the same process used for upgrading your Agents. Once you reach the current maximum level, you must modify your W-Engine using another resource.

To modify W-Engines, you need to open the Agent menu and navigate to the Equipment tab so you can examine their currently equipped W-Engine. There, you can open the same leveling menu and modify the W-Engine so you can upgrade it through another set of ten levels.

You’ll need Dennies, which you earn from every activity in the game, and a Component. The type of Component changes depending on the W-Engine’s specialization. For one that’s built for Agents specializing in attack, for example, you’ll need Attack Components. You can get these from the W-engine Modification Combat Simulations in the HIA Club.

By the time I came to modify my W-Engines, I had a lot of Components already in my storage, most likely from story missions. However, these are incredibly simple to grind from the HIA Club, provided you pick up a few coffees to keep your batteries charged.

Once you’ve reached a certain point in Zenless Zone Zero‘s story, you can also enhance your W-Engines using Drive Discs, which slot into the spaces around the W-Engine in your Agent’s Equipment tab.
