How to unlock the Dark Crusader class in Lords of the Fallen

Taking on titans.

If none of the starting classes in Lords of the Fallen have much appeal, then the Dark Crusader is an alternate option that you may wish to explore. The Dark Crusader looks exactly like you would expect. A tattered cloak and spiked helmet add nice details to the sleek yet powerful armor and massive sword that you will be using to put the world to rights.

There are three different ways to unlock the Dark Crusader in Lords of the Fallen.

  • It is included in the Lords of the Fallen Deluxe edition and Collectors edition and will be available from the start of the game if you purchase it.
  • It can be purchased separately as “Dark Crusader Starting Class” on storefronts for $6.99.
  • You can unlock the class by playing the game and completing the quest line about a character called Dark Crusader Isaac, and you then need to finish the game.

There are numerous steps to Issac’s quest, but thankfully, most of it takes place in areas that are easy to reach through the main story campaign.

The first thing to do is take out the very first boss in the rather long game. This is a pretty standard Soulslike encounter that also contains a bit of a surprise, forcing you to learn combat basics and some patience to be able to progress. When the fight is over, head to the right of the area and follow a path to find an item called the Flayed Skin. This is, horrifically, a piece of Isaac’s brother, who was executed. If you get to a part that requires you to Umbral and cross a bridge, you have gone in the wrong direction and should backtrack.

Up next is the long process of finding Umbral Stigmas that show pivotal moments of Isaac’s life. These can be found in the following locations and will need to be soul-flayed when you find them:

  • Lower Calrath – from the Depot Vestige, head down the hill and cross the bridge in Umbral form to find the stigma.
  • Fief of the Chill Curse 1 – this one can be found at the Fief Vestige, which is nice as this area is extremely dangerous.
  • Fief of the Chill Curse 2 – proceed through the area and take out the main boss of the area (no spoilers here), then head for the tower on the right and keep processing down until you reach a river. It’s time to go Umbral and then proceed forward until you find the Stigma.
  • The Path of Devotion – from the Memorial Vestige, go down the narrow path, and you will find it to the rear of the area on the edge of a cliff, marked by some swarming blue bugs. It’s tempting to explore the Path of the Devotion early, but don’t head here until you are past the Fief of the Chill Curse, as it is unlikely you will survive the area before then.

Now, keep fighting through the Path of Devotion, and you will come to an extendable bridge. Pull it toward you, and you’ll get access to a small arena where you need to fight a boss called Paladin’s Burden, who appears to be Isaac himself. Taking them out will get you an Umbral Flayed Skin. From there, just play on until you reach the Lightreaper fight. You will need to use Isaac as a helper during this fight, so be sure to do so. Once that is done and the Lightreaper has been defeated, that will get you access to the class.
