How to unlock Machinist, Astrologian and Dark Knight in Final Fantasy XIV

As you begin to level up in Final Fantasy XIV and unlock new areas, you might find an urge to try out new Jobs. Thankfully, at higher levels, you’re not limited to simply the starter Jobs and can begin to unlock new and exciting ones at different landmark levels. 

Once you’ve made your way to Ishgard, you’ll have the opportunity to try out three new Jobs, all of which begin at level 30:

• Machinist – Ranged Physical DPS
• Dark Knight – Tank
• Astrologian – Healer

Before you can pick up any of the unlock quests for these Jobs, you’ll need to have completed all of the Seventh Astral Era quests, up to and including “Before the Dawn”. This is the quest that unlocks Ishgard, where all of these Jobs are unlocked. 

Despite the fact that these Jobs begin at level 30, you’ll need to be at least level 50 in any other Job before you can pick up the unlock quests for Machinist, Dark Knight or Astrologian. You’ll need to complete two separate quests for each Job in order to fully unlock them. 

How to unlock Machinist in Final Fantasy XIV

Once you’ve successfully entered Ishgard, head to Foundation and track down Stephanivien (X:8.1, Y:10.1). The quest to unlock Machinist is rather aptly named “So You Want to Be a Machinist”. 

There’s not much required of you in this first quest; simply answer ‘Yes’ when Stephanivien asks if you’re interested in learning how to be a Machinist. This will unlock the follow on quest “Savior of Skysteel”, and completing this second quest will fully unlock Machinist.

How to unlock Dark Knight in Final Fantasy XIV

Inside Ishgard, make your way to The Pillars and find a specific Ishgardian Citizen (X:13.2, Y:8.8). The quest you need to unlock Dark Knight is called “A Dark Spectacle”. 

Completing this first quest will immediately unlock the follow up quest “Our End”. When completed, this second quest will render you a fully-fledged Dark Knight and allow you to play as the Job going forward.

As a side note, the Dark Knight storyline is, at least in my opinion, one of the most touching and well-written side quest storylines anywhere in FFXIV, so I will always advise anyone to pay close attention to it. 

How to unlock Astrologian in Final Fantasy XIV

Once you’ve met the requirements and find yourself inside the city of Ishgard, head to The Pillars and find Jannequinard (X:15.2, Y:10.0). The quest you’ll need to pick up is called “What’s Your Sign”. 

After answering ‘Yes’, you’ll unlock the follow-on quest called “Stairway to the Heavens”. Completing this quest will fully unlock Astrologian and allow you to play as the Job moving forwards.
