How to unlock and use Facewear in FFXIV Dawntrail

Glasses and hats! Finally!

One of the new features added to Final Fantasy XIV with Dawntrail is the Facewear slot. This allows players to equip both hats and glasses, which is a fun change. However, the feature isn’t accessible until you’ve got some Facewear to use.

Thankfully, you have a couple of options to get your hands on new Facewear. You can either head to the Gold Saucer and get some new shades or get your old Fashion Accessories back via a Calamity Salvager.  Until then, you’ll run into the “Unable to display. This feature is yet to be unlocked” error.

How to get Facewear at the Gold Saucer

To unlock Facewear in FFXIV, go to the Gold Saucer, then head to the Prize Claim Attendant (X:5.2, Y:6.6) and select “Prize Claim III.” Scroll down, and you’ll find the following items for sale:

  • The Faces We Wear – Thick-Rimmed Glasses (30,000 MGP)
  • The Faces We Wear – Contemporary Pince-nez (40,000 MGP)
  • The Faces We Wear – Rimless Glasses (70,000 MGP)
  • The Faces We Wear – Minstrel’s Spectacles (90,000 MGP)
  • The Faces We Wear – Oval Spectacles (100,000 MGP)

Once you’ve purchased some spectacles, right-click them in your inventory and select “use” to make them available as Facewear.

There are four former Fashion Accessories which have been turned into Facewear:

  • False Oval Spectacles
  • False Shaded Spectacles
  • False Classic Spectacles
  • Rose-colored Spectacles

If you go looking for these items within the Fashion Accessories menu, you won’t find them, but don’t panic. In order to get them back, all you need to do is head to one of the initial major city states and talk to a Calamity Salvager.

Depending on the city state, you can find the Calamity Salvager in the following locations:

  • Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X:11.4, Y:14.4)
  • Old Gridania (X:10.0, Y:8.4)
  • Ul’dah – Steps of Thal (X:12.6, Y:13.1)

Getting your spectacles back in the form of Facewear won’t cost anything, and once you’ve got them back from the Calamity Salvager, they’ll also come in 12 different colors to choose from.

The items which rewarded these items as Fashion Accessories have also been removed entirely from Final Fantasy XIV. However, if you happen to still have these items in your inventory or storage, using them after the release of 7.0 will reward you with the Facewear equivalent of the item.
