If you’re looking for some backup in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, you can’t go wrong with Automatons. These mechanically engineered war machines are dreamed up by Dampé, but you’ll need to put the time in before you can unlock them.
Automatons won’t unlock until you’ve cleared the Rift at Hyrule Castle, which is the third Rift you’ll venture into in EoW. Once that’s done, though, you can run off and find Dampé.
Where is Dampé in Echoes of Wisdom
Dampé’s workshop is located northwest of Hyrule Castle Town, close to the Zora River. You may have already come across his workshop in your adventures, but if you interact with the door, there will be a sign on it saying “I’m out wandering”.
Finding him can be a little tricky, as he seems to pop up in random places. I found him just northeast of Hyrule Ranch, while I’ve also seen reports of him showing up to the northwest of Lake Hylia. Make sure to explore as much as you can, and you’ll know when you’ve found him, because a cutscene will play as soon as you get close.
Dampé is having trouble with a Crow, who has stolen a key. All you need to do here is defeat the crow (a Buzz Blob Echo is a solid choice here) and then Dampé will invite you to his workshop.
How to unlock Automatons in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
Once you’ve got Dampé back in his workshop, you can start thinking about making Automatons. Unfortunately, this won’t be a simple process, and you’ll need to collect a variety of Echoes to help provide inspiration for Dampé.
There are a total of six different Automatons to unlock, all of which require a specific pairing of Echoes, which Dampé will only describe with riddles, or an Echo and an item. When you’ve got these Echoes and items, head to Dampé’s workshop. Echoes can be summoned on the platform in the middle of the room to give inspiration to Dampé, while items will need to be given directly to Dampé.
How to use Automatons in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
Once you’ve unlocked any of the following Automatons, you can find them by holding the right directional button, then use the right Joy-Con to select which one you want to use. It will replace your currently active Echo, and you use the same button (Y) to summon an Automaton as you would an Echo.
When you summon an Echo, you’ll also need to wind it up, and no I don’t mean that you have to annoy it. After making the Techtite Automaton, Dampé will provide you with a Clockwork Key. You’ll need to press Y after summoning your Automaton in order to wind it up, then it will begin working. If you’re wanting to speed this up, you can use certain Smoothies to increase your winding speed.
How to repair Automatons in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
Automatons are not indestructible and will break over time and with usage. In order to repair them, you’ll need to revisit Dampé in his workshop. Repairing an Automaton will cost you Monster Stones, which can be found in chests across Hyrule.
How to unlock the Techtite Automaton in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
The Techtite Automaton is useful, as it jumps just like its Echo counterpart. When it jumps, it blasts any enemies in a circle around it. Creating this Automaton is technically part of the “Automaton Engineer Dampé” quest, and you’ll need the following two Echoes to create it:
Description | Echo | How to find |
“Creature with the big eye – the sort that’s always jumping around” | Tectite | Found in western Hyrule Field |
“Something that shoots hot smoke out of its backside to blast forward” | Mothula | Found in the Garude Sanctum dungeon |
Having completed the “Automaton Engineer Dampé” quest, you’ll now be able to interact with the book on his desk to get information about other Echoes you’ll need to show to Dampé in order to make more Automatons.
How to unlock the Tocktorok Automaton in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
The Tocktorok Automaton is the EoW in-game equivalent of a mounted gattling gun. When summoned, it will shoot fireworks at any enemies nearby extremely quickly.
You may need to wait a while before you can create the Tocktorok Automaton, as it requires you to have cleared the Rift in the Eldin Volcano area. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to access a side quest that unlocks one of the Echoes needed to make the Tocktorok Automaton:
Description | Echo | How to find |
“A creature that spits stones out of its mouth” | Octorok | Found in Suthorn Prairie |
Dampé will tell you bluntly that he requires fireworks | Firework | Complete the “The Fireworks Artist” side quest in Goron City |
After making the Tocktorok Automaton, you’ll be able to main the next two in any order.
How to unlock the Gizmol Automaton in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
The Gizmol Automaton is the first that requires a specific item and Echo pairing, rather than two Echoes. When summoned, the Gizmol Automaton dances and sings, and shoots music bubbles that deal damage to enemies that touch it.
Here are the Echo and items you’ll need to create a Gizmol Automaton:
Description | Echo / item | How to find |
“A jiggly monster with cute little eyes” | Zol | Found in Suthorn Forest and Hyrule Field |
“A part that makes beautiful tones” | Prismatic Music Box | You get the music box by completing Flag Races at Hyrule Ranch. You’ll need to have unlocked a horse in order to take part in Flag Races. |
How to unlock the High-Teku Baba Automaton in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
The High-Teku Baba will eat and swallow enemies, but cannot be moved once summoned, so you’ll need to make sure you place it tactically to make the most of it. This Automaton is another that requires a specific item as part of its pairing, rather than two Echoes.
Here are the Echo and items you’ll need to make a High-Teku Baba Automaton:
Description | Echo / item | How to find |
“A creature that swallows things with its massive jaws” | Deku Baba Lv. 2 | Found in the Faron Wetlands, south of Scrubton |
“A special part that can strengthen its ability to clamp down on things” | Steel Trap | Talk to the Acorn Man in the western part of Hyrule Field, who will give you the Steel Trap if you can collect all of his acorns within the time limit. |
How to unlock the Roboblin Automaton in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
The Roboblin Automaton has a swipe attack that deals damage to any enemies in a huge triangle before it while ignoring any defense those enemies may have. It’s really useful in battle and definitely worth making if you can. Again, the Roboblin Automaton requires a special item to be made:
Description | Echo / item | How to find |
“A monster with a sword who fights alongside others” | Sword Moblin (any level) | Found in any of the enemy ‘camps’ around Hyrule |
“A special weapon” | Heirloom Katana | Earned by completing six challenges at the Slumber Dojo in Kakariko Village |
How to unlock the Goldfinch Automaton in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
The Goldfinch Automaton can only be created after you’ve made all four of the other available Automatons. When summoned, the Goldfinch Automaton will swoop and attack any enemies nearby, causing them to drop Rupees, including blue and red Rupees. This is good news if you need the funds to unlock new accessory slots.
The Goldfinch Automaton can also be used as Glider, making it especially useful when exploring.
You’ll need to do the following two things to make a Goldfinch Echo:
Description | Echo / item | How to find |
Dampé will simply ask for a Crow | Crow | Found in Hyrule Field |
“A real special flashy something” | Golden Fan | Obtained by completing the Standard Seed and Vibrant Seed levels of Mango Rush in the Gerudo Desert |
After making the Goldfinch Automaton, Dampé will offer to give you the Clockwork Bangle accessory in return for five Monster Stones. When equipped, this allows you to wind up Automatons much faster.
