Fallout 4‘s next-gen update was released on April 25, bringing native versions of the game to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, updating graphics, and fixing issues. One of the features included in the patch is Performance Mode, so here’s what it does, and how to turn it on.

What does Fallout 4‘s Performance Mode do?

Fallout 4’s Performance Mode targets 60 FPS (Frames Per Second) and offers 4K resolution support. This does come at a small cost to graphics quality though, as they will take a little knock as the game prioritizes frames over beauty.

Should you leave Performance Mode off, the game will focus on making the game as beautiful as popular, and you can expect FPS to sit around 30-40 Frames Per Second.

How to turn on Performance Mode in Fallout 4

Turning Performance Mode on in Fallout 4 is thankfully pretty easy. In fact, there are only four steps to doing it:

  1. Pause the game.
  2. Scroll down the pause menu to ‘Settings.’
  3. Select ‘Display.’
  4. Scroll down the options to ‘Performance Mode’ and toggle it on.

That’s literally it!

Should I use Performance Mode in Fallout 4?

Personally, I would recommend using Performance Mode in Fallout 4. I didn’t find the quality that much different between the two modes, but I did feel that with Performance Mode off, the game felt a bit stuttery, whereas Performance Mode on felt very smooth.

Unfortunately Performance Mode is not working on Xbox Series X|S at the moment, but when Bethesda drop the fix, I think it’s worth turning it on and trying it for yourself.
